What should I expect during the first session?
The first appointment is an initial 50 minute assessment. It is an opportunity to meet and involves finding out in detail what has brought you to therapy. This will include questions about when the problem started, how it varies, things that may have been tried before to deal with it, the impact it has on your life, work, home, relationships, and what thoughts and feelings you have about it. Towards the end of the session, you can choose whether you want to engage in on-going therapy and further dates and times can be arranged. We will work collaboratively and there is no obligation to commit.
I have tried therapy before and it did not work so why should I try again?
Sometimes people who have tried therapy before have doubts in the value of trying further therapy. There is a wide range of therapies and different people resonate with different styles as well as approaches therefore, finding a therapist can be difficult. It is understandable that you may look around before you find someone you feel comfortable with and can engage with on a regular basis.
How do I know which counselling approach is most suited to me?
I am a flexible, integrative practitioner providing evidence-based psychological therapy interventions drawing from cognitive behavioural (CBT), person-centred, trauma-focused CBT, narrative exposure and psychodynamic theories. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your unique needs and can discuss therapeutic approaches in further detail when we first meet so you can decide how you would like to proceed. Please look at the different therapeutic approaches I work with.
Will the sessions be confidential?
Yes, sessions are confidential with the exception if you pose a danger to yourself or others. In that case, the relevant parties will be informed.
Can I talk to you before booking an appointment?
Yes, I offer a free 15 minute pre-assessment telephone chat. This is a good opportunity to ask questions and check whether I am able to help. You are not obliged to continue with therapy if you do not wish to.
